• What got me in to motion design

As the 2011 winds down and I look forward to what 2012 holds for my career and family I think about what got me to where I am today. I remember back in 2006 I was just surfing the interwebs and came upon some work from a studio called Onesize. Up until this point I was content with living in the world of live action. I thought that writing, shooting, and editing would be the tools I used every day for the rest of my working life. I always enjoyed motion graphics and incorporated it into my work but never to the degree I use it now. So anyway, I found Onesize and took a look at their reelĀ and I was just amazed.

The airwaves are polluted with motion graphic work but this stuff was just so refreshing. At that moment something clicked in me to know that this is what I wanted to do. I already new After Effects a little bit at that point but I learned more and then I went out and bought Cinema 4D and started to learn it. I went back to school to finish a degree focusing on design. All of this started by me watching a reel. I hope 2012 is an epic year and if it is I think I’ll owe the people at Onesize a beer. Do you remember what got you interested in motion design?

  • Pixar Homage Finished

Here is the finished poster I made for my daughter. It was a lot of fun to work on and I enjoyed putting all the little details in the type. And she hasn’t seen it yet because I’m waiting on the frame. Actual size is 20″x30″. I used C4D for all the 3D work and then Photoshop for compositing. I’ve never rendered something this large in C4D since most of what I do is used for broadcast so it surprised me when it took 10hrs to render one frame. Below is a closer look at the letters.

  • Holiday Fun Project

For Hannukah I wanted to give my daughter something unique that she would really connect with. So I came up with the idea of creating a poster for her that would connect her to her favorite characters from Pixar. Here is an early version of the poster, I still have a lot to do but the forms are there. Hopefully before Hannukah ends, it will be done and on her wall. I’ll post the end result when I am finished.

  • Going To California

This week I started planning my trip out to LA for the end of January and I am very excited. All my friends are out there so I get to see them and catch up, but I’m most excited to stop by a couple of my favorite motion graphics studios and meet some of the faces behind the work. It is my family’s plan to move to Los Angeles in the near future. I hope I get enough out of this trip to make that happen.

If you know of any place I should go whether it be a food place I should try, a person I should meet, or studio I should visit. Let me know, I want to make this as productive a trip as I can.
